AUC Data Science Initiative PreFreshman Experience (PFx): Data for Social Impact

Program Overview

  • The AUC PreFreshman Experience (PFx) virtual summer program offers incoming HBCU students a chance to engage in data science before the start of their first year. Throughout the one-week program, students will explore applications of data science and learn about different career opportunities. The program will provide an immersive experience in a data science project with a college professor and research mentors. Students will engage in excellent networking opportunities with data science professionals as well as with students from across the HBCU community. This one-week virtual program exposes incoming HBCU freshmen to data science opportunities and how to use data on issues affecting Black America. This year's theme, “Data for Social Impact," will incorporate research topics that solve societal challenges through data insights and innovation. Eligibility This virtual program is open to accepted and confirmed students who will attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Fall 2024. Program Dates July 15-19, 2024 (Monday-Friday) 11:00 am - 1:30 pm ET and 2:00 to 4:00 pm ET daily

  • Participating students will have the opportunity to: Participate in a creative project, with student mentors, to analyze a data set and provide recommendations Work alongside HBCU professors Engage in leadership development on how to be an ethical leader and an agent for positive social change in data science Build skills to prepare for college Meet and learn from a variety of data scientists from different companies Guidance on how to succeed in college, internships, and career Interact with other HBCU students and make friends Exposure to other data science opportunities Completion Participants will receive a certificate and $350 upon successful completion of the program and its deliverables.
